Pfizer Inc. on Monday said its sexual health and wellness products are available to purchase in Australia.
The world’s biggest drugmaker is launching its first generic version of Viagra, the blockbuster drug that has revolutionised the way people combat erectile dysfunction (ED) and wants to be the best man in the world. Its generic Viagra will cost a fraction of the price of the brand-name version, and will come in a much more affordable range of ED medicines, including tablets and injections.
In a statement, Pfizer said it is committed to meeting the growing demand for affordable Viagra in the coming years.
“We are committed to developing and commercialising generic versions of Viagra that meet the evolving needs of our customers,” the company said.
It will also introduce generic versions of sildenafil, the generic version of Viagra sold by Pfizer, for the treatment of ED, the company said.
Pfizer said its new product line will include sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, to be “a high-strength and long-lasting solution for ED”.
“We are pleased to provide customers with an affordable and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction that is long-acting, convenient, and easy to use,” the company said.
In Australia, men can purchase the brand-name Viagra under the name Cialis, which has been on the leading pharmacist’s preferred pharmacy list for a decade.
Last year, the drugmaker added Viagra to the list of approved brands, selling a range of its generic medicines in pharmacies.
The new drug line is being developed by Eli Lilly & Co., a privately held company with a primary manufacturing partner, and is expected to launch in the first half of next year in Australia.
In a statement, Lilly said it had received numerous customer feedback on the product line and that customers were satisfied with the service.

Viagra has been a household name in Australia since 1998, and is already the brand-name drug for erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer Australia said Viagra was the best-selling product in Australia at $1.83 for a supply of 30 tablets, down from $2.50 last year. It also beat the rivals Cialis and Levitra’s effectiveness in the market, at $2.06 and $1.87, respectively, but was $1.84 lower in the US.
Pfizer Australia said it had received several customer feedback on the product line and that customers were satisfied with the service.

Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.

“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”
